New Year, New Focus, New Flavors

As we start out the year, we are choosing to be more intentional with our giving, our time, our talents, and our finances.  We have chosen to partner in three areas this year-a local ministry/organization, a National and an International.  This month we are highlighting Purposeful Living Inc (PLINC) as our local organization and partner for 2019.

What is PLINC? 

PLINC is faith-based non-profit here to serve the modern woman; the woman who looks like she has it all together but behind closed doors, she’s hurting, searching, or lonely. We are here to love, to walk alongside, and to encourage women to be all God created us to be: peaceful, joyful, and authentic. Using empowerment events, coaching, workshops, and growth groups, PL INC is transforming women, marriages, and families.  Through the love of Christ in a safe community, women are finding and living out their purpose thus creating a ripple effect in our world.

When Kate first learned about this organization last year and heard their mission, she laughed and said, “Well that describes every woman at one point or another.”  Her own journey had been a series of ups and downs living in isolation, insecurity and personal doubt.  Since learning of PLINC, not only has she personally experienced some of the enrichment, leadership and events offered, she has become a coach to help other women during times of doubt in both business and personal growth.  What resonates most with Kate is the authenticity that the women in this community exhibit and their “WHY” they do what they do. “There is so much sincere love, support and connection felt throughout all aspects of the organization and [it] resonates so deeply with me.” Kate shares.  It is a community of women supporting women and instead of a competitive environment, it truly is a place that helps not only pose the question, “how can I help you be the best version of yourself and to thrive in your giftedness,” but also helps you find the answers. 

We all put on a brave face and we at times struggle silently.  Some interesting stats that may surprise you of your neighbor, your boss, the barista you see each morning, the woman in line at the grocery store or even in your small group. 

Did you know……

12 million women are diagnosed with depression each year in US. That’s 1 in 8. So the next networking event of 24 women, 3 are suffering with this disease.  

America is the #2 country leading in depression.  

Women have a higher rate of depression than men and women are twice as likely to have depression as men of the same age.

20 million American women suffer from eating disorders. The next conference of 200 that you attend, that is around 30 women who silently live in shame.

And something Kate has personally experienced is isolation and loneliness- a modern day epidemic.  Studies show that in the 1970s and 1980s, those who experience loneliness was between 11% and 20 %. In 2010 it was closer to 40% to 45%. In 2016, studies showed that almost three-quarters (72 percent) of Americans experience loneliness. 

We have become a lonely & isolated society.

Box of Joy

We love making personal touches in our kitchen. That’s why all our treats are handmade and handbagged. We even meticulously place each sticker in the proper spot on the bags and jars. We measure out the perfect amount of ribbon to tie on top and add a little dash of holiday fun with leaves or holly.

We have an assembly line system most days, but it’s still all by hand. Pouring love into each box as we get ready to ship it out.

With the busyness of the holidays, some of our orders go to people right in our backyards, so Kate decided we would deliver them ourselves. Here’s Gwen, our Marketing & Social Media Manager’s, story of the deliveries she made.

“First off, I had no idea how beautiful Zionsville is! There were all these cute little neighborhoods that looked like they belonged in a fairy tale. So many were decorated for Christmas too, I can only imagine what they looked like at night.

I only had a few boxes to deliver, but I was really excited to take them to everyone’s house. I know how much I love getting mail from actual humans. You know the feeling; you go to open the mailbox and inside among all the ads, flyers and bills is a handwritten note from someone. It means so much knowing that they took the time to write to me. That’s why I wanted to deliver the packages.

The second house I went to was this older home, you could just tell that life had really happened here. Maybe the family that built it no longer lives there, or maybe the family’s grandkids live there now. You could just tell that many moments had happened in the yard and on that porch. I wasn’t sure if anyone was home, so when I rang the bell I counted to 15. No one came, so I set the box by the door, said, “Merry Christmas!” and started to make my way back down the driveway.

A few seconds later I heard the door opening. I spun around and raced back onto the porch, wanting to hand deliver the box. The lady who opened the door looked so surprised! It was precious.

“A package, for me?” She asked, shocked that she was receiving a gift. I asked her what her name was to make sure I’d gotten the right house. It was her’s alright. I handed her the box and I- I honestly wish I had a camera with me. It was so sweet how her face lit up, her eyes wide wondering what was inside. She looked like a child on Christmas morning, walking downstairs to see the tree with packages piled underneath knowing they were for her.

A few homes later, another lady had almost the same reaction. She saw me coming through the window and greeted me at the door with a cheery, “A delivery?! For me?”

I handed her the box after asking her name. Her eyes grew wide and her smile even more so. She looked from the box to me and back again. “Well, thank you, dear.” She said as I was walking away from the door. “Merry Christmas!” I said as I stepped off the porch. “Merry Christmas!” She said back to me as she went back inside, still marveling at the box in her hands.

It got me thinking, how much more joy would there be in people’s lives, let alone the world if we showed people how much we appreciate them? Sure, maybe we all don’t have the financial ability to give our loved ones’ castles and car services no matter how much they deserve them, but there are always small ways we can say how much we appreciate them. We can send notes, we can call, we can show up with cookies and tea for an afternoon of chatting. If we can send gifts, we should send them. Think about the last time you received a gift that wasn’t on your birthday. How did it make you feel? I’m guessing, pretty darn loved.

That’s why I love what we do, we get to love on people in a way that you may not think about. All with a little bit of chocolate.”

Giving Tuesday

We’re all about the giveback in our kitchen.

Every year we have tons of organizations and groups approach us about donating to a fundraiser and every year we are blessed with being able to stand alongside so many. This year, in honor of Giving Tuesday, we wanted to share a few of the organizations we’ve given to.

Domestic Violence Network of Greater Indianapolis works to engage the community to end domestic violence through advocacy, education, and collaboration in the community at large. DVN leads our community in cultural change toward ending domestic violence once and for all. They work with the public to gather data, deliver better resources and engage with influences. Their work is focused squarely on creating a roadmap that enables them to do what they do best- lead the way, as we become an increasingly healthy community. Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation mission is to invest in children with visual impairments so each child will thrive in school and daily life. IBCF is a philanthropic foundation that financially supports the unique work of the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Johnson County Autism Support Group seeks to provide support to area families affected by autism. Originally the group met to provide support to families affected by autism and financially assist children in need of therapy. While the group continues to do these things, they have also expanded to include social events for families and funding for community programs. Paws n Think works to improve lives through the power of the human-dog connection. They serve at-risk youths, at-risk canines and children and adults with disabilities/special needs in Central Indiana. They are a volunteer and community-based organization. They also work in partnership with schools, detention centers, youth agencies, humane societies/shelters and more. Check out their website with more ways to get involved!

The Patachou Foundation works to feed wholesome meals to food insecure school children in our community and teach them to create healthy habits. They currently have a 2020 vision that they are dedicated to. They want to make a measured effect on hunger in our community by reaching 1000 individual students annually. Tots and Paws is part of the Hamilton County Humane Society and they host an annual Red Dress Gala to raise awareness for the Humane Society and a toy drive for Toys for Tots! Want to put on your red dress, have fun and help a good cause? Check out their website for tickets!

Small Business Saturday Celebration

There are two types of small business owners: the ones who have everything figured out before they start and the ones that figure things out along the way. Kate is the latter half. Sure, she had a well thought out design and ideas of what she was working to create: a way to show a little extra love to clients, co-workers, family, and friends. But she didn’t have all of her products perfectly designed before she started, she just took the leap of faith to start working on her passion.

When Kate was first starting out, she stayed true to her original flavors. With time, she expanded her portfolio by always having a passion for creating new combinations and always taking it up a notch.  She was and is committed to getting the product in the hands and more importantly in the mouths of everyone as she feels that is her best marketing tool -the product speaks for itself.  However, it didn’t take long before she realized she could get similar results with way less product and most unexpectedly fell into her number one selling product-the niblet.

There she was at Metazoa Brewing a couple of years ago at a tasting. She had created a lovely display with jars of niblets for people to taste instead of the ½ rods which she typically handed out. A most intrigued patron came up and offered to buy a “jar” of product.  Well at the time they were just samples, but it immediately gave her the idea that if there was an interest, there may be a market.  And thus the niblet was born showcasing itself in a 4 oz, 8oz, and a jar-packaged product. This is just many of the ideas that continue to evolve as you grow a business.

Labels change, boxes change, vendors change.  The product is added and some are taken away.  Even the concept of naming her products.  When she first started, most of the products were as they are, such as almond, MM®, pecan, Butterfinger®. With the wisdom of her advisors and taste testers (family members), she got creative and started adding cute names to her standard portfolio of pretzels and ever-expanding portfolio of artisan truffles.  You can find a How To Kiss A Millionaire or Keep Me Up All Night truffle but you will not find mint or coffee.


As she has evolved, she has also sought out strategic partnerships with like-minded, high-quality vendors.  From the beginning, she was passionate about working with a local coffee roaster for her coffee truffle, but after several failed attempts of people just not getting it, she was introduced to Jerry Hubbard of Hubbard and Cravens, who welcomed the opportunity to support her efforts and now every coffee truffle has a little H& C espresso powder in it.  She still is looking for strategic liquor partners as she has not found quite the right fit to date. She knows that when the time is right, it will present itself and be far greater than she hoped or imagined.

You can’t think small as an entrepreneur but you have to think strategically, thoroughly and be patient with yourself and others.  Her motto in starting out: under promise, over deliver and always put your best foot forward. There will always be hundreds of opportunities to chase, but knowing who you are and what you stand for and most importantly why you do what you do, keeps your head up and allows for continued growth. This philosophy has kept her thriving business from making mistakes and enjoying the unexpected and timely opportunities for some amazing connections and collaborations.

Again, Kate had no idea that the niblets would be as successful as they have been, nor did she even think about creating them at the beginning of her business. “As a business owner, you go in with one idea and then it evolves into something else. Some people wait until they have everything sorted and all of it looks the best. For me, it is a constant evolution.” Kate says.

Four Day Ray and Press Release for Roll Fast

We are super excited to be apart of this event as the 2017 sponsor for Rollfast 501c3.  Four Day Ray has partnered with Rollfast to help promote wellness and health in our local community. Through financial contributions, Rollfast has made an impact in the lives of many Indiana youth.
